Starting with her studies of nutrition science at the University of Hohenheim, Deborah Buk has already become interested in lipid rafts - dynamic microdomains in the plasma membrane. After a stay at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the lab of Prof. R. Anderson, she was getting further involved in the investigation of lipid rafts, fascinated by the high and precise organization of molecules and processes on the cellular level. In the course of her Ph.D. thesis in the lab of Prof. L. Graeve she started to study the role of lipid rafts in the signal transduction pathways of interleukin-6-type cytokines, which are important mediators in the acute-phase response, inflammatory processes and differentiation and survival of cells. Moreover, she illuminated the polarity of the respective cytokine receptors in polar epithelial cells. The results of her studies, which emphasize the important role of raft microdomains in the signalling processes of IL-6-type cytokine receptors, are presented in this publication. In 2005 her work was awarded with the ´Prof. Wild-Award´ for her excellent research performance.
