Magnetic resonance imaging is a widely-used noninvasive technique in medical diagnosis and fundamental scientific research to visualize the structure and function of living bodies. In magnetic resonance imaging, a magnetic field produced by gradient coils plays an important role in obtaining a high-resolution image or in reducing the imaging time. The design of gradient coils for magnetic resonance image applications is an inverse problem, in which a specified distribution of the magnetic field inside a region of interest is generated by choosing the optimal distribution of current density on specified non-intersecting design surfaces. This thesis proposes three iterative numerical optimization methods for designing gradient coils for different applications or with different specifications. Numerical examples demonstrate the validity of these three methods in the design of gradient coils. The designs have led to successful gradient coil implementations.

Feng Jia recieved the B.S. degree in computational mathematics from the Peking University, Beijing, China and the M.S. degree in computational mathematics from the Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as a PhD-student at the Department of Microsystems Engineering in the Laboratory for Simulation of Prof. Jan G. Korvink at the University of Freiburg.
