In rural Bangladesh, vitamin A deficiency is a cause of infant mortality, blindness and other vitamin A deficiency disorders. To address this problem without the use of vitamin supplements and food fortification, it is necessary to increase the availability of vitamin A from either livestock products in the form of preformed vitamin A or plants in the form of provitamin A. The consumption of vitamin A from livestock products is very low in rural Bangladesh, and for socio-economic reasons this is unlikely to change. As a result most households de-pend now, and will continue to depend in the future, on provitamin A, de-rived from plants, to meet their daily vitamin A re-quire-ments. The optimal plant source of vitamin A has been a source of debate. One approach has been to promote dark-green leafy vegetables but a majority of the recent intervention trials have shown this strategy to be less effective than had previously been assumed. This study concludes that the promotion of pumpkin cultivation in home gardens rather than dark-green leafy vegetables will be a more effective means to reduce the high prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in rural Bangladesh.
