In this book, a novel and applicable mathematical model is introduced for the different levels of the operating theatre scheduling problem using mathematical programming. The model describes in detail how to efficiently find an appointment for patients requiring surgery in hospitals, how to suggest a robust surgery schedule of elective patients to operating rooms for the next day, and how to adjust such a schedule to the course of events arising on the surgery day. The proposed model considers the relevant aspects characterizing and constraining each planning level, while describing and optimizing the associated multiple criteria.
This book includes a thorough introduction to the practical problem and an extensive survey on the existing literature as a framework for the main results. Moreover, the developed theory is applied to real case data obtained from hospitals in Germany and The Netherlands.
