An endogenous biological clock helps us to do the right thing at the right time, by anticipating transitions between day and night. This circadian clock controls all levels of biology from gene expression to behavior. In the present thesis various aspects of hand function were shown to be circadian rhythmic, also. The skilled and powerful use of the hands is indispensable for workers at many workplaces like surgeons or firemen. Medical and security services are prominent examples of professions that are required to work at un-biological times beyond the normal waking day. Due to the worldwide increase in the use of shift-work schedules to expand the productive period, we need to understand the mechanisms underlying time-of-day specific impairments to develop new strategies to make endogenous and external temporal programmes more compatible.
