The skin is frequently exposed to environmental stresses such as UV-irradiation and pollutants. Therefore, it is highly dependent on effective antioxidant and detoxifying mechanisms to prevent severe alterations leading to premature skin aging or skin cancer. Since the transcription factor Nrf2 orchestrates the expression of antioxidant and phase II enzymes, Nrf2 may be centrally involved in the regulation of cellular defense mechanisms in skin. It has already been shown that secondary plant compounds like the isothiocyanate sulforaphane modulate Nrf2 activity in skin in vitro and in vivo. In the present doctoral thesis the effect of structurally related isothiocyanates and indoles as well as anthocyanidins on the Nrf2 signaling pathway has been investigated in cultured keratinocytes and fibroblasts.

Insa Ernst studied Nutritional Science at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and the University Politécnica in Madrid. In 2008 she obtained her Master of Science degree and started her postgraduate studies at the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food Science in Kiel. Her research activities focused on the molecular effects of secondary plant compounds in skin. She received her doctorate in 2011.
