SCHLAGWORTE:
graft polymerization (free radical)
surface attached monomers
grafting-through
catalyst immobilization
biomolecule immobilization
unctional copolymer monolayers
In this volume the surface modification of solid substrates with monomer-bearing silanes and subsequent use in radical polymerization is described. The surface-attached monomers during the polymerization process provide the buildup of a covalently bound polymer monolayer and the mechanistical details are discussed.
Various substrates are equipped with polymer layers of different polarity and with copolymer layers with functional groups. The characterization of these hybrid materials and copolymers is described as well as their use in different applications like catalyst or biomolecule immobilization. Also building microstructures with this system is shown.
This "grafting-through" method is a robust and effective way to tailor surfaces for a large variety of applications.
