Molecular Characterization and Regulation of Ammonium Transporters in Arabidopsis thaliana

Ammonium is, besides nitrate, the most important nitrogen source for most plant species. Although physiological studies provided evidences for the presence of ammonium transport steps across different membranes, the molecular identity of the underlying transporter proteins remains poorly understood. Using a combination of genetic, molecular cell biological and physiological approaches, the present work demonstrated that in planta AMT1-type ammonium transporters (AMTs) mediate ammonium influx into roots across the plasma membrane, and aquaporins of the tonoplast intrinsic protein (TIPs) may participate in vacuolar ammonium compartmentation. It was also indicated that Arabidopsis plants modulate nutrient transport process according to the actual nutritional status of the plant at the multiple regulatory levels.
